System Dynamic Lights addon for Minecraft Bedrock

💡 System Dynamic Lights – Minecraft Bedrock

Carry supported light sources and illuminate your surroundings dynamically.

System Dynamic Lights allows supported vanilla Minecraft items to produce light while they are being used in different ways, including the main hand, offhand, compatible helmets, dropped items, and supported entities depending on your configuration.

💡 How It Works

The addon allows various vanilla Minecraft items to produce light. Supported items can also receive lore that shows information managed by System Dynamic Lights.

System Dynamic Lights supported light items

The addon can add information to the item lore so you can see details such as the item's light level and other supported usage information.

⚙️ Configuration Book

The System Dynamic Light book contains two main sections: Settings, where you can change the addon configuration, and Information, where each option is explained. The Close button closes the menu.

System Dynamic Lights configuration book
1. Enable Dynamic Light

This is the main switch for the entire addon.

  • Enabled: Activates all dynamic lighting features.
  • Disabled: Disables dynamic lights, automatic offhand activation, and special offhand placement.
2. Offhand Light

Controls the light produced by supported items held in the offhand.

  • Enabled: A torch, lantern, or another supported item in the offhand produces light around the player.
  • Disabled: Items in the offhand do not produce dynamic light.

This only affects lighting. The item can still remain in the offhand.

3. Helmet Light

Controls the light produced by compatible lantern helmets.

  • Enabled: Compatible helmets produce level 15 light.
  • Disabled: The helmets can still be worn, but they do not produce light.
4. Preferred Light Source

Determines which player light source has priority when multiple sources are available at the same time.

  • Brightest Available: Uses the source with the highest light level.
  • Original Priority: Helmet, Offhand, then Main Hand.
  • Prefer Helmet: Tries to use the helmet light first.
  • Prefer Offhand: Tries to use the offhand light first.
  • Prefer Main Hand: Tries to use the main-hand light first.

If the selected source is unavailable, the addon uses the brightest remaining source.

5. Placed Offhand Activation Method

Controls how a supported light item is automatically moved from the main hand to an empty offhand.

The player must be looking at the air for this feature to work.

  • Disabled: Disables automatic movement to the offhand.
  • Use Item: Use the supported light item while looking at the air.
  • Sneak + Use Item: Sneak and use the supported light item while looking at the air.

The offhand must be empty before the item can be moved.

6. Offhand Torch Placement

Controls how compatible light blocks are placed directly from the offhand.

  • Disabled: Disables special offhand placement.
  • Sneak + Hit: Sneak and hit a block to place the light on the selected side.

The space where the light will be placed must be empty.

7. Offhand Place Light Blocks

Determines which types of light blocks can use special offhand placement.

  • Torches Only: Only items containing torch in their identifier.
  • Torches and Lanterns: Allows torches and lanterns.
  • All Placeable Lights: Allows every supported light item that also has a valid block version.

Some items can produce dynamic light but cannot necessarily be placed as blocks.

8. Dropped Item Lights

Controls the light produced by supported items dropped on the ground.

  • Enabled: Supported dropped items produce dynamic light.
  • Disabled: Dropped items do not produce dynamic light.

For example, a dropped torch or lava bucket can illuminate the area where it lands.

9. Maximum Dropped Items Light

Determines how many dropped items can produce light at the same time in each dimension.

  • 10 Lights: Processes the 10 supported dropped items closest to players.
  • 25 Lights: Processes the 25 closest items.
  • 50 Lights: Processes the 50 closest items.
  • Unlimited: Processes every supported dropped item.

Using Unlimited may affect performance when many items are on the ground.

10. Entity Lighting

Controls dynamic light produced by living entities.

  • Disabled: Entities do not produce light.
  • Burning Entities Only: Only entities that are currently on fire produce light.
  • Natural Glowing Mobs Only: Supports Blaze, Magma Cube, and Glow Squid.
  • All Supported Entities: Allows both burning entities and naturally glowing mobs to produce light.
11. Item Information

Controls the information added to the lore or description of supported light items.

  • Disabled: Removes all information added by System Dynamic Lights.
  • Light Level Only: Shows only the light level of the item.
  • Full Information: Shows the light level and instructions for using the item.

For example, it may show how many blocks the item illuminates, whether it can be used underwater, and how to move it to the offhand.

12. Dimension Settings

Determines the dimensions where dynamic lighting works.

  • Overworld Only
  • Overworld + Nether
  • Overworld + The End
  • All Dimensions: Overworld, Nether, and The End.

Dynamic lighting, dropped item lights, helmet lights, and entity lights are disabled in dimensions that are not selected.

🔦 Additional Features

🤚 Offhand Mechanics

Items that support the offhand mechanic can be equipped by using them. Hold the item in your hand and use it while not looking at a nearby block so it can automatically move to the offhand.

If the item can also be placed on the ground, make sure you are not looking at a block when using the mechanic.

System Dynamic Lights offhand mechanic

Items that include the corresponding message in their lore can be equipped in the offhand.

⛑️ Miner Helmets

Lantern helmets provide a light level of 15 when worn and have the same durability as their regular counterparts. They can be enchanted and repaired using the game's standard materials.

It is recommended that the helmet used in the crafting process does not have enchantments, to avoid losing them.

System Dynamic Lights Miner Helmets

Crafting uses the helmet of the desired material together with a torch and leather.

🌊 Underwater Lighting

Sea Pickle lighting was added with a total of 13 lighting blocks and the ability to illuminate underwater.

The Sea Pickle can also be placed in the offhand, where its underwater lighting remains at 13 blocks.

🆕 Changelog

V3.2.8 – Translations

Added translations to all languages for the descriptions of light-emitting items, the new items, and all information shown in the configuration book.

V3.2.7 – Fixes, Performance, Light Catalog & Lore

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where picked-up light-emitting items without lore remained in a separate stack.
  • The inventory now normalizes lore after a change and manually merges stacks that are compatible again.
  • If block placement fails after consuming the item, the original stack is restored.
  • Fixed lantern_chainmain_helmet; lantern_chainmail_helmet is now supported while maintaining compatibility with the old ID.
  • Removed runCommandAsync; lighting functions now use runCommand.
  • Removed gamerule showtags false.
  • Player lighting now takes priority over nearby dropped items and light-emitting entities.
  • Priority applies to main hand, offhand, and compatible helmet lighting.
  • Dropped items and entities within a 5-block radius temporarily suspend their own light.
  • Suspended light sources begin producing light again when the player moves away, changes dimensions, or stops carrying a light source.
  • Suspended items temporarily do not count toward the configured dropped-light limit.

Performance

  • Player lighting continues to update every tick.
  • Dropped items are processed every 4 ticks.
  • Light-emitting or burning entities are processed every 5 ticks.
  • The inventory is no longer scanned 20 times per second for each player.
  • playerInventoryItemChange updates lore when the inventory changes.
  • A fallback check is still performed every 20 ticks.
  • A temporary lock prevents loops caused by setItem inside the inventory event.

Light Catalog

  • Replaced broad includes() searches with exact identifiers and controlled item families.
  • Prevented incorrect matches such as magma_cream when searching for magma.
  • Light level, automatic offhand movement, and placeable block information are unified in one catalog.
  • Items without a valid block version no longer attempt placement in All Placeable Lights.
  • Added mappings for redstone, repeaters, and comparators when block IDs differ from item IDs.

Lore

  • Lore now uses Light Level: X instead of Lighting: X Blocks.
  • The System Dynamic Lights marker is placed before lines managed by the addon.
  • Removal of the new lore format no longer depends on the language of visible lines.
  • Compatibility with the previous English lore format is maintained, including Lighting and Lightning variants.
V3.2.6 – Configuration Book

Added the detailed System Dynamic Light configuration book with Settings, Information, and the lighting options described above.

V3.2.5 – Redstone Items & Cave Fix
  • Added Redstone Dust, Redstone Repeater, and Redstone Comparator to the catalog of light-emitting items that can be placed in the offhand.
  • Fixed a bug where items would not emit light while being used inside caves.

To place items in the offhand, look toward empty space with no blocks, then use the corresponding interaction control for your platform.

System Dynamic Lights V3.2.5 offhand example
V3.2.4 – Place Torch Offhand

To place torches while holding them in the offhand, use Sneak + Hit on the block where you want to place the torch.

A torch must be in the offhand and the Place torches while sneaking option must be enabled in the Torch Config Book settings.
